Day 2: Chapter 6

Sometimes when you wake up, your eyes snap open, you sit up, and you’re ready to get up and go. This was not the case for Roger this morning. For him, the waking-up process was more like having a janitor sweep all the scattered pieces of his consciousness into a pile in the corner and then poke at them until they started to assemble themselves, not always in the configuration in which they were supposed to be. His body sense told him that he was lying on his left side, facing both the window and the night table, upon which was a digital clock that read 9:00. His nose told him that the window was wide open and that the air had changed from the passage of a cold front last night, the one that was marked by a thunderstorm and the passionate lovemaking, combined with all of the other things that that had left him in this state. His ears registered sounds coming from the bathroom behind him, which was most likely Sarah doing her morning ablutions.

His right arm received a command to reach for his wire-rimmed glasses that were on the night table. After some consideration, it agreed to the demand, reaching out to grasp them and returning on an only slightly wobbly path to stick them on his face. Finally aware that the brain had rebooted, complaints came flooding in from parts near and far, mostly of stiff and sore muscles made so by his lying there all night without moving. A loud and insistent alarm was coming from his bladder, stating in no uncertain terms that it was at maximum capacity and that Something Should Be Done and Soon. Fortunately, it was at this time that Sarah opened the door and walked out, resplendent in her birthday suit. His eyes bugged out as she strutted around the end of the bed to his side.

“It’s alive! It’s aliiiivvveee!” she said, her brown eyes twinkling. Roger grunted.

“Har-har. So says the gorgeous woman responsible for my current pathetic condition.” He fumbled for his phone, also on the night table, tapped it a couple of times, and added “I have a text from the Sun. It says to stop being so radiant, you’re making it jealous.”

“Ooh, flattery already! You are a silver-tongued rascal.”

“Flattery? There are only luscious curves as far as my eyes can see.”

“Keep that up and you’ll be flat under me,” she grinned, leaning over to kiss him on the forehead. Roger’s hands found and fondled her dangling boobs, quickly stimulating her nipples into hard little nubs. “Aah!” she jumped back. “Sensitive!” Roger grinned.

“If you stand between me and the bathroom,” he said, sitting up and swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, exposing his totally inert genitals for her to ogle, “you will either be flattened or get very wet.” He hustled in and closed the door. Sarah heard the loud fart and groan of relief as nature took its course in the proper way. As he took his shower and shaved, she activated his laptop and looked around the Internet to see if there was any record of what had happened last night at the concert in the park. There were plenty of videos on YouTube and Twitter showing them dancing with each other, dancing with the ghosts of their deceased spouses, then Roger’s horrible pun and the flash of light as whatever spell he’d set off raced outward at tremendous speed.

“So, are we famous yet, Sarah?” Roger asked as he emerged from the bathroom.

“Oh yes,” she replied. “All the videos on YouTube are going viral. It’s nuts!”

“That was one hell of a special concert,” he said, rummaging around in his backpack for some clothes. “I have never felt so much love in the air as there was last night.” He pulled out a navy blue T-shirt, light blue shorts, white socks and white cotton briefs and dropped them on the bed so he could start getting dressed.

“I’ll have to put this dress back on and find some clean clothes in the family apartment later,” she said. “Your shorts are a few sizes too large,” she added before he could interject.

“I’ll have to get my stuff together and check out after breakfast. I imagine that your sister will want to rent out the room to someone else tonight.” His stomach gurgled, and hers responded.

“Wow, we’re already so close that our bodies talk to each other,” she said, wrapping him in a warm embrace that became a much warmer kiss. “Let’s get some food. The day awaits.” They went down the stairs arm in arm to the second floor and turned to walk down the hallway to the head of the stairs to the main level and could hear the sounds of people in the restaurant.

“It sounds busy today,” said Roger as they walked down the curving staircase. “Is it the Sunday morning brunch crowd?”

“I’m not all that familiar with how things work here,” she replied as they reached the bottom. “Hi, Emma! How are you doing this morning?”

“Aunt Sarah! You look like a million bucks!” Emma replied with a huge smile, getting up from the chair, running around the desk and giving her a big hug. “Roger, you also look great,” she added.

“Thank you,” he replied. “You practically light up the place! That lovely ring really sparkles.”

“Oh manisa escort Goddess, did Bill finally propose to you?” Sarah grabbed Emma’s hand for a closer look. “It’s beautiful! Congratulations! I’m so happy for you!” Sarah gave her an enthusiastic hug that all but squeezed the breath out of her.

“Yes, it was last night, just after the concert had broken up. That was a cool effect with you and the ghosts, by the way, and how did they do that flash of light at the end of the song?” Roger and Sarah looked at each other and shared a knowing smile. “I turned around and there he was on his knee with the ring! Everyone around us cheered and clapped for us!”

“And did anything else happen when you got home?” Sarah asked innocently. To their surprise, Emma turned a bright red and they laughed.

“We showed each other what love is,” she replied, blushing even more.

“That red reminds me of strawberries that I’m not eating right now,” Roger hinted. His stomach growled in agreement, making the two women laugh at him. When Sarah’s grumbled back, they all laughed. “Congratulations, Emma. I have no doubt that Bill is the second-luckiest guy in town.” He batted his eyelashes at Sarah and she rolled her eyes and snorted. Emma laughed.

“You two were made for each other. See you later.” The phone at the desk made a twittering noise and Emma scuttled to answer it, and Roger and Sarah went to the entrance of the restaurant, where they waited to be seated, as per the sign. It was busy and every table seemed to be occupied.

“Everyone here seems to be in a terrific mood,” said Roger. “In all my years, I’ve never been in a place that’s been wall-to-wall smiles.”

“It’s infectious,” Sarah replied, with a dazzling smile lighting up her face. Just looking at her made his him feel like his heart would burst.

“They’re here!” said a voice from within the restaurant. “There they are!” Conversations stopped as all eyes turned to where Roger and Sarah stood, looking confused. There were about 30 people, and they all stood up, cheering, whistling and applauding. Julia appeared at the far wall and pulled a cord, and a hastily-made banner reading “Congratulations, Roger and Sarah!” unfurled.

“Well, go in!” said Emma, who’d come up behind them, putting a hand on each of their backs and giving them a gentle push. Numbed with shock, Roger and Sarah walked past the bar and the tables right across from it, shaking hands with total strangers and with some that Sarah recognized. When they finally made it to where Julia was standing next to an unoccupied table.

“Please sit,” said Julia, so they sat. Marcie appeared and poured them coffee.

“Thank you, Marcie,” said Roger with a glazed expression. Sarah smiled her thanks and stared at the mug. The others returned to their tables and the room became quiet.

“Less than a day ago, Roger Matheson was all but blown into this building by the big thunderstorm,” said Julia loudly. “Only a few hours later, he rescued Sarah from the clutches of a wretched demon using a most unorthodox method.” There was a ripple of laughter and they both reddened. “And only a few hours after that, they had become all but married and somehow became at least partly responsible for a night that we won’t ever forget.” There was more happy murmuring.

“What makes you think we’re almost married?” asked Sarah through a mouthful of pancakes and blueberries that had been delivered shortly after the coffee. She had suddenly realized how hungry she was. Roger was inhaling a waffle, liberally bedecked with strawberry jam and applesauce.

“Those of us who can see auras can see that yours are very closely linked,” said a man’s voice from the back. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

After an inquiring look to Sarah, and receiving a nod of assent, Roger drank some coffee and said “Yes, it is safe to say that we managed to become very close in a very short period of time. We were two lonely souls who seemed to be just what the other needed. Once I can get my hands on a ring, we can make it official.” There was an enthusiastic round of applause. “That is,” he added, once that died down, “If she’ll have me.” There was a pregnant pause as Sarah appeared to consider, then drew it out by sipping on her apple juice.

“I do not know how he captured my heart so quickly, nor do I know how I managed to capture his. But before the sun sets tonight, Roger will also have a ring on his finger, and he will be mine forever.” There was another round of applause and cheering. Roger’s blushed some more.

“I already am, body and soul,” he said, raising his glass of orange juice in salute. Sarah clinked hers to his and they both drank some, to more applause. “Now everyone, eat!” The rest of the people returned back to their breakfasts and the noise of conversations quickly ramped up.

“What was that all about?” asked Sarah as Marcie gave them each a small bowl of mixed summer fruit and took their empty plates. “It seems like a lot of trouble for you.”

“It’s a small town,” said kütahya escort Julia, placing a hand on her sister’s shoulder. “With all the weirdness that’s been going on lately, plus that truly magical night last night…”

“You got laid,” grinned Sarah.

“Like I’ve never been laid before. Now that was magic. You two were definitely a big part of what happened, and I and all the women in here, and in the whole town for that matter, wanted to say thanks for it.”

“It was a team effort,” Roger replied, finishing his coffee. “The Purple Chimps were amazing, and deserve as much credit as us. If credit is the right word,” he added. “What happened last night was magic, in the true sense of the word.”

“I am more and more inclined to agree with you,” Julia replied. “I’m going to make a few calls. Don’t go too far.” She smiled, turned, and walked out of the restaurant, with perhaps a bit more sway to her hips than one would normally see.

“You are full of surprises,” said Sarah. “Given that we haven’t even known each other for a day, I suspect there are a few more waiting for me.”

“I know there are many waiting for both of us,” he replied soberly, reaching across the table to take her hand in his and looking deeply into her brown eyes. “As much as we love each other, integrating our lives after we’ve been living alone for so long will be a serious challenge.”

“You’re a Virgo, aren’t you?” Sarah smiled at him, returning his gaze into his hazel eyes. “That’s just one thing we don’t know about each other. You’re romantic, but also have your feet planted firmly on the ground at the same time.”

“I’ll be damned if that smile of yours doesn’t cause even more global warming,” he replied with a wink. To his surprise, she blushed a little. “Yes, I’m a Virgo. September 8th. I’ll bet that you’re a Scorpio. Dark, passionate, secretive, ambitious?” he inquired with a half smile.

“Oh, you’re good. November 15th is my birthday,” she replied with a shake of her head. “It is a crappy time of the year for a birthday.” She raised her hand to attract Marcie’s attention, which wasn’t difficult given that the restaurant had become half empty. “Let’s have the check please, Marcie. It’s time for us to get out of here and see what the day has in store.” Having anticipated this, Marcie produced the check, whose cost was split by Roger and Sarah.

“Thanks, Marcie,” said Roger. “I hope that you had a good night last night.” She reddened somewhat, and they snickered. “I’ll take that as a yes.” They got up, gave Marcie a hug, and returned to the lobby. “So, what do we do now? I have to get my stuff and find myself a new place to camp out. Do you have any suggestions?” he added innocently.

“Meet me down here in 15 minutes,” Sarah replied, tracing a line across his face with a finger. “My house is about 20 minutes from here, and we can enjoy a morning walk together.” Roger waggled his eyebrows and gave her a chaste peck on the cheek, aware that they were being watched. They separated and Roger went to his room and Sarah went to the apartment in the back of the building. He brushed his teeth and packed his stuff into his backpack, while she borrowed a blue suitcase with wheels and a strap for pulling for her clothes that had been brought over while she’d been possessed by the demon.

As it happened, Roger got to the lobby first, where he encountered Minnie, the black cat he’d met after he’d just made it into the bed and breakfast before the storm had broken. She came over to him and accepted his attention with loud purrs. He knew just where and how to scratch and pet her.

“You’ve made a friend for life,” Sarah observed as she arrived in the lobby, with Emma looking on, leaning on the desk. Sarah had changed into a pale yellow T-shirt, light blue shorts that went to mid-thigh, sneakers and white socks, with a white purse over her shoulder. Emma shook her head and grinned impishly.

“Get him to give you a backrub when you get home,” she told Sarah with a wink.

“Thanks for everything, and especially for putting up with me,” she replied, giving Emma a hug. “I’ll see you later.” Pulling a reluctant Roger away from the now blissed-out cat, she led them out the door and into the sunny morning. “If you can do to me what you did to that cat, I’d be the happiest woman ever.” Roger set his pack on the porch, to one side of the door.

“Maybe I can do a test on your shoulders,” he offered.

“Your hands are glowing,” said Sarah. In the shade of the porch, the constantly shifting turquoise, green and yellow patterns were quite visible. She set down the pulling strap of her suitcase and turned around, somewhat apprehensively.

“OK, here we go,” he said, putting his hands so that his spread out fingers went from the base of her neck to about the midpoints of her shoulders. Although he was by no means a trained masseur, he had years of experience tending to Jeannie’s needs, along with strong, capable hands and fingers. Plus he noticed that little tendrils of light were slipping into her skin where he malatya escort could feel tense muscles. Her aura flickered into visibility where he was working, and the blue and yellow formed a background against which the red formed small streaks that seemed to indicate muscles that needed attention.

“Dear Goddess, that feels totally amazing!” she groaned after five minutes. She turned around, wrapped her long and surprisingly strong arms around him and kissed him hard, taking him by surprise, but he quickly recovered and returned it. After their lips reluctantly parted, they could see that they were both glowing, especially around their erogenous zones. Even Roger’s cock, totally DOA this morning after the previous night’s over-use, was showing some signs of returning to life, as she found out with a none-too-subtle grope, generating a half-hearted squawk of protest.

“If we want to make it to your house, I suggest we don’t do any more of that,” said a rather flushed Roger. “If nothing else, I don’t want to set off another event like last night.” He picked up his backpack, loaded it onto himself, and clicked the clips that held the padded belly band and strap that connected the arm straps. “Gaah, how did I manage to lug this thing all this way?” he complained. “Maybe you’ll have to work on my back and shoulders,” he said, waggling his eyebrows.

“I’m probably nowhere near as good as you,” Sarah replied, picking up her suitcase so she could go down the stairs to the front walk, at which point she put it down and began to pull it behind her. It was a beautiful morning, heralding one of those days that people wished would compose the whole summer. The air was clean and cool, the sky was a clear blue with puffy white cumulus clouds, and there was a gentle breeze from the north, the direction they were walking. It was a quiet Sunday morning and the shops in the downtown part of Main St were not open yet, and they strolled through it holding hands in companionable silence. Roger looked around curiously, figuring that if he was going to live here, he should start getting to know the town. They crossed the street to walk on the side that formed the eastern boundary of the park. The stage was still up, but unoccupied, as though there were more events planned for the afternoon.

“If time permits, I’d like to come back here and have a look around,” he said. “I love the big shady trees.” They could hear the breeze rustling the leaves, a sound that was both relaxing and refreshing, and found they were walking a bit more slowly, the better to enjoy it.

“This park has been the centre of the town for years,” Sarah replied. “It draws us in like a magnet. Even in winter, there are always people in it.” Roger nodded, then asked,

“Do they have weddings there? Not just photos, but actual weddings? That grove of trees over there by the river makes me think of a great whispering cathedral.” Sarah gave him a wondering look.

“You are such a romantic.” Roger blushed a little, as they continued. “I don’t know. We can always ask at City Hall tomorrow. A small wedding party would probably be OK, so long as you don’t mind an audience of strangers.”

“I’d gladly share that day with anyone who would want to share it with us.” Sarah smiled and waved her hand above his head. “What’s that all about?”

“I’m trying to find your halo,” she replied impishly. “You sound way too good to be true.”

“With an angel by my side, how could I not be good?” he asked innocently.

“You and your sweet talk!” she laughed, dropping the suitcase strap and rewarding him with an incendiary kiss that he returned. When they finally separated, they were glowing again. “We still have a way to go to get to my house. Can we control ourselves until then?”

“If we want to avoid getting busted for indecency, I think we should,” said Roger dryly, with a twinkle in his eye and a glowing bulge in his shorts. “Look at little Lazarus down there, risen from the dead. You’re a miracle worker!” “Little Lazarus” quickly returned to its original state as they continued to walk and enjoy the beautiful day. Roger looked at Sarah to see if he could figure out what she was thinking. Her relaxed manner, serene expression, and faraway gaze said that she was feeling happy. The Cheshire cat smile and the hand squeezing his butt occasionally warned him that his clothes would likely be coming off soon after his backpack did. “Little Lazarus” seemed to like that thought.

The main street crossed the small river at the far end of the park, and the business area of town abruptly ended. They walked two more blocks, turned right and walked another block, then left. The houses were modest brick one-and-a-half and two storey buildings that looked well kept up, but had the air of having been there a long time and seen a lot. The properties were decent sizes, and there were tall shady trees everywhere, adding to the feeling of age. It was mid-morning on a Sunday, but there were plenty of signs of activity, with parents walking babies in strollers, people mowing lawns, washing cars, and gardening. Many seemed to know Sarah, responding with friendly waves and hellos, to which she happily responded. He knew there was no way on Earth that he’d want to take her away from this, and also idly wondered what all these people did for a living.
